| I probably would have benefited from this kind of thing when I was in school. Pass it along if you know any students, teachers, or professors you know think might be interested in the info, or sharing it with their classes.
So You Want to Major in Art, Music, Dance, Writing or Theatre, But Then What?
This free panel discussion is intending for all high school and college students interested in exploring a career as a professional artist and/or arts administrator. Parents of students are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Date: Sunday, October 4, 10:00am - 12:00pm Location: MCAD, 2501 Stevens Ave. Minneapolis Registration: Free, but attendees should pre-register online at www.springboardforthearts.org
Parents want to guide their children toward college and career choices that will be rewarding. Sometimes parents and students are steered away from careers in the arts because of the common misconception that one cannot make a living as an artist. This workshop will help both students and parents better understand the options and how best to plan for and support a decision to pursue an education and a life in the arts- visual, theatrical, musical, design, literary, performance - our panel of local working artists in a variety of disciplines will talk about their career in the arts and answer your questions.
We'd greatly appreciate encouraging your students to attend this panel. If you have questions, please contact nikki@springboardforthearts.org
Springboard for the Arts is a non-profit organization based in St. Paul that helps artists make a living. For more information, please visit www.springboardforthearts.org | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| Did you know that the Minnesota Rollergirls are hosting the North Central regional roller derby tournament? It's THIS WEEKEND. The Minnesota All Stars' first game is against Windy City, currently the top ranked team in the midwest. Come watch us duke it out! If you've seen and enjoyed our home team bouts, you should definitely come; derby at the regional and national levels is harder, faster, and more competitive. It's really fun to watch and I guarantee you will see some *amazing* athletes!
Games start late in the morning on Friday and go through the weekend. The Windy City game is at 2:30pm on Friday. We'd love to have your support! More information, a full schedule, and how you can get tickets is here: http://brawlofamerica.com/ | comments: Leave a comment |
| Home from the desert. Washed, vacuumed and delivered rental car last night, then watched Stardust and ordered pizza, which is becoming the traditional way S4 and I decompress. Stayed home from work today. Slept late, sorted the physical and e mail, dealt with some bills and billing weirdness, shipped restock cds to cdbaby (hooray!), and heated up leftover pizza for lunch. Will start the umptyzillion loads of dusty laundry shortly. There's a bizarre sort of comfort in completing menial tasks. Have duties for the co-op tonight, but otherwise don't plan on doing a lot. Things I am especially thankful for right now: the fact that I left the house in a condition that was nice to return to, and that the big work-y conference that has always happened two days after I return is not happening this year.
The desert was good. Not mind blowing, but a good time. Uneventful in a good way, I think. Still sorting it out, I guess.
10 years. Huh.
Happy Burner New Year. | comments: 9 comments or Leave a comment |
| | Well, I completed my grant application. They always seem to take more work than you expect, but they're generally worthwhile, even when you don't get them- they force you to think about hard questions and get your shit together. (This is also what we tell people at work... it sounds kind of Pollyanna since so many more people apply than get funded, but, I do actually believe it.) I feel this one is stronger than the last one I submitted (and didn't get), but, who knows. It's also the first time I bothered to meet with a program officer to talk about my questions, too, which was a good idea. Considering the travel and big events for work and the wedding that've all happened this summer, I'm just proud of myself for managing to get it done. I am going to do my best to not think about it once it leaves my hands. Even if I luck out and get it, they don't tell us until February. | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| Went shopping. Bought dresses. Plural! One is very not-black! And shoes! With sparkle-things on them, even.
Weird. I have no accessories to match. Hmm.
Today it was insanely difficult to wake up, and my throat hurts. Maybe all that lounging around in bed was really good for me...
I'm glad it's Friday. Looking forward to sleeping in late in my own bed, and playing some Wii with my favorite brother and soon-to-be sister-in-law this weekend. :D | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| After a crazy few weeks capped, of course, with getting kind of sick, I'm starting to feel like a normal human being again. I caught a kind of flu-ey bug, probably either from a sick co worker or someone from the Con, which what I blame for falling fast asleep after loading out the SpLounge on Monday despite getting good amounts of sleep and not, generally, being one for naps. The last two nights I've basically gone straight to bed with my lappy after work, though last night I got a little stir crazy and convinced S4 to just walk around the neighborhood with me. Xcel/the Roy didn't have space for derby this week, so there aren't official practices. I haven't gone skating on my own in the interim, which is too bad- between this week and last week I really miss the exercise and don't want to fall out of shape, but the timing couldn't have been more perfect for me to just have a breather and get over this bug without feeling like I'm letting myself or my teammates down. I've done some laundry and dishes, put away a lot of my detritus from the weekend, and started to reset my studio. I woke up with energy this morning for the first time in a while. It feels good.
Tonight I'm going shopping with mom for clothes to wear to the wedding and wedding-related functions. I'm actually looking forward to it; I feel like I haven't gone shopping in a while. I hope I might get a chance to look at some normal clothes too- all but one pair of my jeans are getting threadbare or have holes where I used to carry my cell in my pocket, and I need a new swimsuit.
Summer goes too fast. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

"Neighbor", in our artists' co-op, means neighbor in kind of a small town sense... we all know each other and work together. We have pot lucks and pumpkin carvings and orphan Thanksgivings and spring cleaning day. We have troublemakers and alliances and old rivalries and older friendships and meetings that last too long and arguments about pets and bills and when we should buy new washing machines. We tell each other when we have art openings and performances. When the Con schedule allows, S4 and I watch the fireworks over the Mississippi on the roof of our building with everyone. I don't want to sound cult-y, but we are, basically, a kind of family. Lowertown is like a tiny artist-town stuck in the middle of a major downtown metropolitan area - it's a lot of why I like it here so much. And it's also why it sucks so much when someone like Jean is suddenly gone. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| Friday morning: Dear neighbor tragically killed by a truck. The rest of Friday: Get this news, and then set up and execute huge fundraiser for work. Finish packing out ~midnight. 5am Saturday morning: get up to fly to Philly for 3 day roller derby tournament. Miss memorial gathering of neighbors because of being out of state. Monday night: fly back. Tuesday: Fiscal year-end at work (I do bookkeeping.) Also, funeral for aforementioned neighbor, 1.5 hours out of town. Wednesday: Load in for CON, where I will be until.. Monday?
I feel really overwhelmed, and kind of need more physical and emotional rest than I can afford right now. This is a really bad position to be in coming in to the convention. I'd planned to sleep in and go in late for work tomorrow. Now, because of the funeral, I don't really know what to do, or what exactly needs to be done to tie up the loose ends, or if it's better for me to go in after hours or on Wednesday. I don't feel like I can let any of these things budge, they all need to happen.
I also don't have information I need from musicians, and for some god forsaken reason, I put myself on the bill even though I haven't practiced a set for even five minutes in two months.
If there are one or two people who would like a last minute Dj set in the space lounge on Friday night, let me know... | comments: 8 comments or Leave a comment |
| Dear LJ,
The website that my workplace uses has a big crazy backend that serves as our organizational database.
Throughout my tenure here, I've served as tech support/web maintenance, and have been learning more about how it works through osmosis, but I mostly only make cosmetic changes and add the odd static page here and there. I would like to learn more about the nitty gritty of the coding so that I could have more autonomy to make changes and fixes in the database parts. Unfortunately for my macintosh sensibilities, it uses Access and .asp, and while I like problem solving and taught myself enough html and css to made a website, I don't really have any programming or web development experience.
What are good resources for me to learn this stuff, and/or would this be over my head? | comments: 7 comments or Leave a comment |
| I got an 800-600 firewire cable and the Firebox still doesn't work, so it's officially for sale. I'm going to clean out some other gear I have sitting around that I'm not using, too. I have some travel plans I'd like to make and hospital bills I'd like to get rid of, and having gear I don't use around the studio doesn't help. I think these prices are fair, but I'm willing to barter, especially if you want to take more than one of these off my hands.
Presonus Firebox firewire 6x10 audio interface. In great shape, original package/docs and some included software, cable, and power supply. $160
MOTU 828 firewire interface, used, in decent shape: $100.
SKB 4 rack space flight case, 19" deep. Dusty and a bit scratched, but tough as hell. $100
Behringer FCB1010 midi pedal. Bought brand new, lightly used. $100
Kurzweil K2000 sampling keyboard. This one's hard to give up; we have a lot of history. But, I just don't use it anymore and I'd like to see it go to a loving home. Comes with full analog sample set, all documentation, a bunch of tutorials, plus a zip drive and soft case. $450.
Electrix Repeater phrase sampler/looper. Used, in great shape. This is a super cool little piece of gear that's also a little hard to part with, but, I just don't use it now that I'm a drooling fangirl of ableton live and barely leave my house without my laptop. Will throw in a flash card and reader. $550.
Let me know if you or anyone you know is interested! | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| In case I ever wondered what I looked like getting backhanded in the eye while rollerskating, now I know!
Looks a bit like I drank lemonade that's gone off. | comments: 7 comments or Leave a comment |
| Note: Due to a circuit design change, Mac Book Pro laptop computers will not supply sufficient power over the FireWire bus to initially boot up the FireBox. Once the FireBox has beeen initially powered on with the included external power supply, you may disconnect the external power supply, the FireBox can then be bus-powered.
AAARGH.
This means that both of the new pieces of gear I just bought SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE THEY COULD BE BUS POWERED actually aren't. For fuck's sake. I was ok for it to happen to one, whatever, but both? COME ON. | comments: 8 comments or Leave a comment |
